About the photographer and Ljosblikk

Ljosblikk /joːs-blɪk/
(a Norwegian word meaning “a glimpse of light”)

Karoline Thyri is a photographer and visual storyteller whose gaze is shaped by nature, landscape and a close attention to detail.

She has always taken time to observe.
Pausing while others move on.
Not always because she was slow, but because something asked to be noticed — a quality of light, interesting formation, a particular atmosphere.

Karoline grew up on a farm, surrounded by mountains, with a sense of space and freedom that has stayed with her. Through sheep herding in steep terrain, working the fields and hiking in the mountains, she learned to be present in the landscape. She learned to read terrain, light and weather — and early on developed an awareness for what many pass by. She remembers stopping during school breaks to look at the mountains around her, wondering how something so vast and close could be taken for granted.

Alongside this upbringing, she found her way early into creative expression. Music, painting and form eventually led her to photography and film. Each discipline has informed the others. Her photographs are not only about place, but about presence: how light settles, what emerges when the pace slows, and what exists in the in-between.

She has travelled widely, and some of her photographs are made far from home — in other countries, landscapes and rhythms. Still, the gaze remains the same. Whether standing in an unfamiliar city or on a familiar mountainside, she looks for what does not demand attention — the understated, the human, and that which leaves space for interpretation. Travel has broadened her perspective, while also grounding her more firmly in what is close.

In 2025, Karoline Thyri initiated Ljosblikk — a creative project and photographic universe in development. Ljosblikk brings together her own artistic work, visual storytelling and ongoing explorations of light, landscape and presence.

Galleri Hellandbui, located in the historic area of Gamle Lærdalsøyri, is the exhibition space Karoline currently works from. Here, she presents her own Fine Art photography and also makes room for artistic expressions by other artists that naturally belong within the Ljosblikk universe, including abstract painting.
Hellandbui is a place for light, calm and reflection — a point of light throughout the year, even during the seasons when the sun hides behind the mountains.

With a background including a master’s degree in film and video production, a bachelor’s degree in digital media production, and further studies in documentary photography and photojournalism during an exchange semester in the United States, Karoline Thyri works at the intersection of documentary, art and visual storytelling.
